Daily Didactic
There is something about 10:00 am that is magic for us. Some people wake naturally at 5:00 am, Brian's grandfather for instance, but for us that time is 10:00. We awoke a little early at 9:45 or so and headed the 60 miles up the road to Tok. We stopped, as is our habit, at Young's Chevron and filled the tank. When it came time to go Brian turned the key and the old and familiar sound of solenoid against dead starter ground away. This is not a new or uncommon ailment for the bus, nor is it very hard to work around, it's just a little unfortunate this early in the game at the beginning of Canada. When you know in advance of the issue you make a point to stopping on a grade so you can roll to a start. Unaware, however, we had stopped in a dip. A friendly mechanic from Young's helped push us to a start and we headed for the border. We stopped at the pleasant oasis that is the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge and had a little lunch under the looming thunder clouds before crossing into Canada. Oddly, the bus started with the key this time.

After convincing the border guard that we were trustworthy (which takes far less energy than it used to) we rolled around the stilled iced over Kluane Lake, through Haines Junction and stopped for gas in Whitehorse. After gassing up, pushing the bus to a start and making the final arrangements for a house painting by a teacher friend while we are gone this summer, we pushed on to Squanga Lake Provincial Campground just west of Teslin for the evening.
