Daily Didactic

We had a quick granola breakfast before commuting to the Antigua main square for a surprisingly early (for us) walking tour.
We’ve belabored this walking tour, and put it off until our last day in town as a result. We really don’t want to be the folks clogging the incredibly narrow sidewalks in a mob of 30, but we’ve also never had a walking tour we regretted and many we loved. The best regarded (by the internet) tours in town are the weirdly specifically named Elizabeth Bell Tours. We finally decided a few days ago that this was the way to go and reserved a tour for this morning. When we arrived we found that Monday at 9:00am is a non competitive time slot. It was just us and Adolpho. Perfecto. We spent the next three hours walking around getting a mixed lesson in history, ethnography, and the current state of Guatemalan society. It was, as always, a very educational and rewarding experience.
When we were done we had one more item to tick off the Antigua todo list, Rincon. This restaurant shows up everywhere on the internet for its “authentic” food and cheap prices. We are game for both and it seems to have its niche nailed. Brian had half a chicken and potatoes. Theresa had chili rellenos. $10 with a couple of cokes. We’ve certainly had cheaper, but not in a tourist town any time recently.
Too much food in our bellys, Theresa napped while Brian found a beverage and uploaded yesterday at a “Viking Bar”. You know, because of the outsized historical viking presence in Central America. The rest of the day was spent in either familiar haunts or getting packed up for our departure back to Guatemala City in the morning. We are sad to be leaving, but it is time to go.

Where we slept last night.
