Daily Didactic

The day began early in the pleasantly wooded Blue Spruce Campground. We aimed the bus west by 7:00, with a mind toward making some miles before we called it a night. The day's drive consisted of two very different sections of road. The first three hundred miles were the very nice, very scenic Yellowhead Highway. This road travels through farm land and forest from Prince George to Prince Rupert. About two thirds of the way to Prince Rupert is the road north to Kitwanga, the southern end of the "Cassiar Cutoff". The Cassiar Highway is a 450 mile stretch of road that leads to Watson Lake, and is a few hundred miles shorter than going north from Prince George through Dawson Creek. The trade off is that the Cassiar has always been a much rougher road. In the past the gravel part of the Cassiar has been considerable, but with every trip it has been a little less and couldn't have been more than 30 miles today.

We drove about half way up the Cassiar and called it a reasonably early evening at a campground we had enjoyed on a trip up three years ago, just north of Iskut.
