Day Two - May 28, 2013
Reykjavik, Iceland
Daily Didactic
Reykjavik, we like it. Won't miss having to try to spell it. Today consisted of getting from the airport to our apartment, sleeping, and doing some light touristing. By instinct, when we hit the Keflavik International Airport we zeroed in on the cash machine for some Icelandic Kroners. We're not sure what we were thinking, but with no awareness of the exchange it seemed like 60,000 sounded perfect. You can look it up, but it was excessive. Getting to Reykjavik from Keflavik involves the "FlyBus", US$20 for two, and 40 minutes. An hour later we were in our apartment and on our way to sleep. We managed to keep that to about four hours and stepped out to see Reykjavik by foot. Our apartment is pretty perfectly located on the edge of "old town" (it's really not a very old town). We walked the quaintish tourist street Laugevegar, climbed the tower of the Hallgrimskirkja for a view, poked around in the new performing arts center made of crazy amounts of structured glass, and hit the grocery for some simple dinner on the way home. After some spaghetti, we walked to the public pool Laugardalslaug. Icelanders take their public bathing seriously and while the pool was huge and had a water slide, the real prizes were the half dozen hot pools (the size of large public hot tubs) and the steam bath. For a bargain price, it was quite possibly the best public pool either of us have ever seen. Eventually, worn out by lounging in hot water, we walked home and fell asleep immediately.
