Day Eight - Jun 20, 2011
Dingle Town, Ireland
Daily Didactic
Today began at the excellent Mike Murphy's B&B with breakfast and advice on today's goal, the Dingle Peninsula loop. We dropped our laundry off at the launderette (which is a wonderful idea) to pick it up when we are done driving for the day. The Slea Head Loop started for us with the possible tourist misstep of a "prehistoric museum", which we think in retrospect was really just some guy from Connecticut's house. Entertaining, but perhaps not entirely authentic. The road hung on to edge of the peninsula and took us to some "beehive" houses and a really great Blasket Islands visitor center before lunch. We had lunch in our first pub where everyone else was speaking English, but stumbled across a small and far more local brew pub a kilometer or so down the road which we hope balanced things out. Arriving back in Dingle mid afternoon we wandered the shops, art galleries, and Brian and Todd ducked into a pub or two. We ate an amazing dinner at the impressive Out Of The Blue restaurant where the menu is determined by the day's catch of the local fishermen, and learned that restaurant food is in fact three times more expensive than "bar food". The rest of evening was spent watching traditional Irish music at a couple pubs. A really great day.
