Daily Didactic

So... we've done this before and clearly buried the memories. Arriving in Munich in their early afternoon and our middle of the night (with only an hour or two of airplane sleep) makes for a long and groggy day. We landed at Flughafen München a little after 1:00pm Munich time. We have a night train to Vienna that boards at 11:30 this evening. Ten hours to transition and poke around seemed pretty doable. But with packs on our backs (and no sleeping opportunities that don't seem like vagrancy) it's actually a bit of a challenge. We caught the metro train from the Munich Airport to München Hauptbahnhof (Munich's Central train station) and were reminded of how much we do not speak German. By the end of our last European train escapade we were getting pretty good at this foreign public transportation thing, but today we could have used some practice. From the Central Station we had a general idea that we wanted to find a beer garden for lunch and a long enough walk to keep us awake for the next ten hours. True to form (and in spite of having walked these streets before) we immediately got lost and eventually were aimed in the right direction by a sympathetic local. We remembered enjoying Englisher Gartens the last time we were here. It is an enormous urban park with pleasant paths, a beer garden, and some crazy canal surfers to watch. Our walk there took far longer than it should have, our hunt for the beer garden was slowed by our sleep deprivation, but the surfers did not disappoint. Late in the afternoon, with a few too many hours left to kill, we headed back toward the bahnhof. We relocated the main tourist drag, found a little dinner, and eventually plopped into Starbucks at the train station for some wifi while we waited for our very punctual night train to arrive. A little after midnight we rolled out of our bahnhof, crawled into our berths, and began six plus hours of glorious sleep.
