Day Four - Jun 1, 2017
Krakow, Poland
Daily Didactic
Today started a little late, which was no shocker. We ate a some breakfast we had picked up from the grocery last night, Brian made some really terrible Polish coffee (even saturated with 3% milk), and we looked at a modest day of touristing. Our apartment is just outside of Krakow's Old Town. Our schtick this trip is staying in (or just outside) "Old Town" wherever we could. In this case we are a little happy that we are outside. Old town was bustling with tourists. Super bustling. We walked into the middle of it a little unwittingly and then made a Brian and Theresa style hasty retreat. Taking the least occupied side streets we could find we ended up at the busy (but not as busy) Wawel Castle. It is perched atop a hill overlooking much of Krakow to the south and west and is an interesting historical testament to Poland's geopolitics. The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt and renovated by successive conquerers over the years, leaving it looking pretty confused architecturally. There is a lovely park ring around the Old Town, which we walked and took a detour off into what we decided was the theater district. Not sure why we decided that, but it was interesting in that "poking around a foreign city" kind of way. In early afternoon we escaped the heat (for Alaskans, it's in the high 80's) in our apartment. Theresa napped and Brian continued to resurrect the editing capabilities of funkymoose.net. After a refreshing nap and some productive coding, we ventured back out in the early evening for a treat our host told us about. In the outdoor market a few blocks from from our flat, an old van rolls up and they cook Kielbasa over a wood fire, which they sell with a bun for US $2.50 or so. It was spectacular.
