Daily Didactic

It was a lazy start to the morning in Old Town Kotor. We (appreciatingly) do not have a long list of todos in Kotor, other than exploring the area on foot. Theresa wanted to look around old town, but Brian was keen on climbing the hill behind Kotor to the Castle of San Giovanni. It is really just a hike up to the top of a ridge for a view, but (because this is "old country") it is bordered by a fortress wall and topped with a castle. There are two reasons you may not want to do it in the late morning, tourist ships and heat from the sun. Despite the fact that we walked out our front door around 11:00, we headed straight up the hill. To be fair, the hill has a stone staircase up much of it. It's also not very long. But the small but ambitious tour boat crowd and the direct sun had us slowing and stopping up much of the ascent. We took a detour through an old hole in the wall and checked out the modest St. George's Church in a saddle beyond the walls. An hour or so from our start we were on top of the Castle of San Giovanni. This is because there isn't much castle left, just some walls and viewpoints. It was spectacular and hot. We decided to dodge the crowd on the stairs and take an old switchback trail past St. George's Church back to sea level. The hike had us ready for lunch and we stopped at the really amazing Tanjga. Best lunch all trip, huge, cheap and yummy. We took an afternoon siesta and poked back out for a short walk along the marina promenade. We called it an early evening and enjoyed a little streaming American television before calling it a night.
