Day Seventeen - Jun 14, 2017
Sarajevo, Bosnia to Kotor, Montenegro
Daily Didactic
Today was a travel day. We had to be down the hill to the tram by 8:30, which would put us at the bus stop a half hour early or so. Today we would sit together. This did not turn out to be an issue, as the bus was fairly empty. It was still without meaningful AC, which made for a long journey to Dubrovnik (where we changed buses to go onto Kotor). The drive across Bosnia was beautiful. The countryside was primarily unpopulated and ranged from ski towns to small villages to industrial cities. The trip to Dubrovnik (which is in Croatia) involved three border crossings. First from Bosnia & Herzegovina into Croatia, then from Croatia back into Bosnia, then back into Croatia. Each involves two passport checks, getting stamped out of one country and then into the next. Occasionally, for reasons that aren't completely clear to us, you also have to get out of the bus and walk through the border check on foot and then reboard the bus. This may be the single strongest argument for the European Union Schengen Agreement (open border crossing) we've ever encountered. We had a much needed layover in a Dubrovnik pizza joint for an hour before heading for Montenegro (and one more border crossing) a little before 6:00pm. We rolled around the Bay of Kotor and into Kotor proper a little after 8:00. We were met by our host Lazar, got settled into our old town stone house apartment, and took a late evening walk. We then called it a successful, if not lengthy, day of travel.
