Daily Didactic

We have a short list in Edinburgh, being here mostly just to see the place. For today the objectives were two, the Edinburgh Castle and the National Art Gallery. We headed out for the castle at a leisurely 10:00 or so. A short, but entertainingly, non-grid walk through old town delivered us at the castle's gate. We joined a free walking tour with perky and sarcastic Leslie. The Scottish are a funny and self deprecating bunch. We appreciate it. The tour was brief and just about perfect, leaving us on our own afterwards for exploration. We took a look at the royal jewels, the prisons of war, and enjoyed the panoramic views of Edinburgh. After an hour and a half, we headed of to our second goal, the National Gallery. On the way and a little off track, we found ourselves back at the Holyrood 9A for another deeply satisfying lunch. Further on the way to the National Gallery, we stumbled across the really exceptional Sir Walters Tower and (counter intuitively) paid admission to climb 287 at times claustrophobically narrow steps to the top, for more Edinburgh panoramas. Although our only stated intention at the National Gallery was the Scottish art exhibit, we accidentally ended up in a temporary show of Titians and Tintorettos and other folks that reminded Brian of Venice. After quite a hunt, we found the Scottish gallery and took in a fair bit of rugged landscape and rustic still lifes. After a stop at Tesco to pick up something a little special, we made it back to our flat by 6:00 for a simple yet excellent 15th anniversary dinner. Brian still loves his wife very much.
