Day Sixteen - Jun 27, 2014
Edinburgh, SCT to Edinburgh, SCT
Daily Didactic
Today was another day of relative relaxation in Edinburgh. We got a late start after some laundry, painting and travelogging. In the early afternoon we headed out for a hike in Holyrood Park which sits at the geographical center of Edinburgh. On our way to the park entrance we took a detour to see the new Scottish Parliament Building. We had been told by a couple of enthusiastic locals that it was a sight to see. Turned out it was, in fact, quite a building. It felt very Scandinavian, bright and simple. We looked around a bit and, suitably impressed, headed out the front door and almost immediately into Hollyrood Park. This is the park we've been looking up at since we arrived. It is ringed on the old town side by the imposing Salisbury Crags (cliffs on a high slope). It's a pretty great place. It's a little like having Anchorage's foothills in the center of town. We climbed up to the park's high spot, Arthur's Seat, for a very nice panoramic view of Edinburgh. From there, we descended and worked our way along the top of the cliff's overlooking our neighborhood. We finally dropped back down, back next to parliament and walked back along the bottom of the cliffs, on a path called the "Radical Road" (for the 1820 war of the same name, not just because it was very cool). Having now walked the length of the park four times in a day, we hit the Tesco for dinner makings and enjoyed some homemade dinner with an extra helping of the World Cup.
