Day Three - Jan 22, 2026
San Marcos La Laguna
Daily Didactic
Today’s biggest challenge was the steep stairs from the lakeside to the road above. Which is to say, it was the best kind of day. The stairs competed with the hardships of drinking coffee, eating excellent cheap food out, doing art, and napping. Glorious. We rose late, a phrase we always aspire to say. The view of Lake Atitlan from the porch and front room were lovely. The sun was shining and we had zero transportation logistics today other than moving one foot in front of another. We got ourselves together slowly and headed into town, up those ridiculously steep and lengthy sloped stairs. A small price to pay. Theresa hankered for a coffee shop with a nice spot to sit and paint, which we found slightly out of the main drag on the third floor of Cafe Luna. The view was spectacular and the expectations low. To quote the great Jeff Zausch, this is what we live for. After an hour or two of moving the needle nowhere, we found a meat and dairyless lunch, and then headed back down to our lakeside to do a little kayaking. But that didn’t happen. Instead we celebrated our lodging by doing more art (Theresa) and napping (Brian). Around dinner time we climbed the hill again, to a burrito spot across the road where Brian finally found some chicken. Dinner was inspired and the view inspiring. Having eaten enough for a few days and expended energy only walking and climbing today, we descended our walkway to the lake in the dark. Dodging frogs and taking in the lights of San Pedro across the lake, we eventually tucked back in and called it the day we both needed.
