Daily Didactic

We got a double whammy today. A travel day and a sick day. Travel days are what they are, and sick days are never fun on the road. We rose to Theresa feeling like our authentic street food lunch yesterday might have been a mistake. We tried getting a little breakfast in the hotel restaurant, but she didn’t last. While she laid back down Brian found a farmacia and secured some remedy. While it’s never great to feel puny traveling, it’s more unnerving to feel puny and know you’ll be in a car for the next three hours. Fortunately, the meds did their job. Our latest private driver Neil picked us up at noon for the three hour drive to Cristo Rey, just outside of San Ignacio in Belize. Neil was a great guy and good fun to talk to which helped the time go by. We left one of his cars in Guatemala and walked across the border into Belize where we were met by a second car, saving us an hour and a half of vehicular border crossing. We got to San Ignacio a little early, and squandered that advantage by visiting three different ATMs trying to find one that worked for some local currency. Neil, who lives in Guatemala now, was raised in San Ignacio and gave us a small tour as we tracked down the cash. We moved on to what seems to be a little expat community in Cristo Rey and were left to meet our lovely new AirBNB hosts. Theresa went directly back to bed and Brian did nothing productive for a few hours, until he fetched dinner up the road and we both called it a more exhausting day than it really was.
