Daily Didactic

Today was a big one. We headed to the hotel restaurant for a quick bite and then relinquished our room. We arranged for a hotel shuttle to the airport at 12:30 and walked the circumference of Isla Da Flores in about 15 minutes. We determined that we had not found the lakeside promenade because it was a few feet underwater, so shifted our goals toward another cup of coffee and a sweet treat. Finally, at 12:30 on the dot we caught the fun shuttle back to the airport to pick up a rental car for the night. You heard us right, a rental car abroad. Yet another wall we are breaking down this trip, if just for a night and on good authority that roads to Tikal are not like roads to Lake Atitlan and Antigua. In our $23 Toyota Yaris we found this to be true with a twoish hour drive on a great road with well behaved peers. We arrived in Tikal National Park at 3:00 and (after figuring out all of the ways we could give the Guatemalan government money to enter the park), we lined up a sunset tour and headed for Tikal Jungle Lodge. We like places that say what they mean, and it turned out to exactly what we imagined a fancy jungle lodge to be. At 4:30 our guide Ariel arrived and walked us around the ruins for about an hour before sending us up some crazy stairs to watch sunset on top of a pyramid with 50 of our new best friends. We got lucky with the weather and had a lovely show. Our tour continued on in the dark and was both educational and entertaining. Eventually Ariel left us to fend for ourselves back at the lodge, so we got a bite to eat and called it an action packed day. Oh, Theresa also almost got a cuddle from a scorpion. Didn’t even have to pay extra for it.
