Daily Didactic

It was an interesting mix of a day. We woke up in the Fort George area of Belize City, which is a bit of a backwater near the water taxi docks. Not a lot going on other than the place we spent the night at, a perfectly serviceable hotel with an overpriced cafe. Our room was great, it was good for the night, but we wouldn’t want to live there. We made it to the water taxi around 11:30, boarded at 11:45, and were hurtling across the water shortly after noon. The boat ride was about an hour, full to capacity, and pleasantly uneventful. We walked the seven minutes to our AirBNB and (after a few fits and starts) eventually found it. We dropped off our bags and headed off to kill a little time before we could check in. Coffee, bagels, and a loop down the dirt road to the “split” (where the south and north sections of Caye Caulker are separated by a small waterway) got us to the hour we could move our bags inside. Our accommodations were clean and cute. After settling in, we took our provided beach cruisers out on an expedition to the southern end of the island. More remote and isolated, it was a fun way to see a bit of the island less traveled. Back at our lodging, Tim and Anne did their best to teach Brian and Theresa a new card game, before we walked the 50 feet out our front gate to dinner. We did another minor exploration of the neighborhood prior to settling in for the night. It was at this point that we realized our bedtime and that of most of the humans within a stone’s throw were likely very different. We settled in to watching a little TV and then headed to bed to the thumpety thump of the club nearby.
