Day Three - May 24, 2012
Munich, Germany to Night Train
Daily Didactic
We woke up at 3:30 in the morning, because that must be some more sensible time in Alaska. We tried to get back to sleep, but eventually gave up and headed across the street for a cup of coffee. Brian again overordered and ended up with a fishbowl of latte. We returned to our room, packed, checked our bags for the day and took off across Munich by foot. An impressive city, Munich. Not super old worldy, but Theresa says this is because most of the city was rebuilt after WWII. The buildings were rebuilt to look antique, but are mostly relatively new. We walked down the main tourist drag, to what we believe was St. Mary's Square. We arrived just in time to stand with a mob and watch a giant "cuckoo clock". We only call it that because it moved, there were no birds. It told a story of how the Germans are better that the Austrians. From there, we walked through an open air market and onto the largest urban park in Europe. It's name escapes me, but I'll come back and add it. The park was amazing, apparently larger than Central Park and had a Biergarten where Germans make liters of beer look like child's play. We walked on to the university and museum district where a thunderstorm gave us an excuse to hide out in a cafe for a few hours. We made our way back to the Pension Locarno around 8:00 and headed for our night train to Venice. We are officially big fans of "couchettes".
