Day Six - May 27, 2012
Venice, Italy
Daily Didactic
It was quite a day. We woke early and realized our plans for getting to today's attractions early had not taken into account Sunday morning in a highly religious town. One of the targets, St. Mark's Basilica didn't open until 2:00 and the others (the Dodge's Palace and the Korrer Museum) were also in St. Mark's Square across the island. We decided to delay our trip back down island and took a stroll to find breakfast. We had some pastry and coffees at another "sidewalk" cafe and then took a walk past the the train station and down what turns out to be the real tourist main drag, which goes from the train station to St. Mark's square. We peeled off at the Rialto bridge and headed back to the apartment to take a break. Theresa sketched and and Brian did not. Around 12:00 we headed for St. Mark's square rejoining the tourist throng at the Rialto bridge. It is no wonder this island is sinking. We spent the rest of the day knocking out the "biggees". The Dodge's (with a long O, not like the truck) Palace was an amazing place that used to house the local potentate of Venice. The place was covered in acres of paintings by "really big deals" and the whole thing was pretty overwhelming. From there we went to St. Mark's Basilica, which houses an overwhelming display of byzantine style gold mosaic work. We topped the museum parade off with the Korrer museum, which on a good day would be outstanding and today simply took 3rd place. We had not done the obligatory vaparetto (water based public transit) ride down the Grand Canal yet, so we caught this back to San Lucia station and walked back to our digs to pack and get ready for a morning train ride to Padua.
