Day Twentythree - Jun 13, 2012
Riomaggiore, Italy
Daily Didactic
The day started nicely late as we headed off for the bit of the Cinque Terre trail system that we missed yesterday, from Monterosso to Vernazza. We caught the train from Riomaggiore (Terre #5, we think) and took it to Monterosso (Terre #1, we believe). We were under the impression this was another chunk like yesterday that was rerouted because of the flooding in October. It turns out that this wasn't exactly right. The trail was not a paved section like that from Riomaggiore to Manorola, but it wasn't an alternate route climbing straight up through vineyards either. It started with some significant up, but leveled off much lower than yesterday and turned into a nice woodsy stroll. It took a hour or so and we dropped back into Vernazza, looked around a bit and then caught the train back to our village, which we've really taken a liking to. We stopped at the market and grabbed a ridiculously cheap and incredibly tasty snack of local prosciutto, local cheese, and a baguette. We enjoyed our view for a while, Theresa painted, and Brian caught up on some pages. We tried to offset last night's dining extravagance with a take out pizza and ended up chatting it up with the newlyweds next door for a hour or two. We called it a late night and hit the hay a little disappointed to be moving on tomorrow.
