Day Twentysix - Jun 16, 2012
Ventimiglia, Italy
Daily Didactic
Our day began in the really wonderful little Hotel Calypso with a free breakfast. It was great to be able to sit and eat and not worry about what the privilege of sitting costs. We walked down and took a look at the rocky, but uncrowded Ventimiglia beach. It appears Ventimiglia is one of those "not quite popular yet" little spots, but is only 20-25 minutes by train from Monaco and Nice. We wandered the small town center, walked through another great little produce and fish market, and then jumped on the train to go take a look at Monaco. We both expected nothing but James Bond and casinos. Ultimately we saw neither (at least that we were aware of) in the few hours we strolled, but we did see a wild concentration of wealth. Enormous Yachts, sports cars worth our house, a castle on the hill, and even a gal in furs being filmed pretending to ride a motorcycle on a trailer with fans on her being hauled back and forth through town. The whole place was pretty fascinating. Eventually we became jaded and jumped the train back to Ventimiglia. We hung out on our balcony for a bit and then headed out for an early dinner. We had been hearing murmurs about a Festival of Flowers that was going on this evening and, indeed, over the next few hours we found ourselves in the middle of a parade, fireworks, and an all night street party. It was great free entertainment and eventually we fell asleep to volumes that reminded us of the front row of a show at the Bear Tooth.
