Day Seventythree - Aug 2, 2012
Oslo, Norway
Daily Didactic
We started our day with another modest coffee and croissant breakfast. We have a 6:30a.m. flight tomorrow morning with Ryan Air, which involves a middle of the night shuttle out of Oslo. We walked down to bus station to make sure we know where we needed to go. About halfway back to our digs rain started to fall, we had planned on walking to Oslo's "Museum Peninsula" to visit the excellently names Viking Ship Museum and decided the rain shouldn't deter a couple of Alaskans. The three plus mile walk was fun and the end was through the royal farms and stables, but we started to get that "Oh that poor couple" looks from passing cars. By the time we got within striking distance we were pretty hungry and decided we needed to just buck up and grab a convenience store burger and soda. Have we mentioned how ridiculously expensive things are here? After dining on some very refreshing food that must have been seasoned with gold flakes, we headed a block to the Viking Ship Museum. It is a really fun old school museum with the remnants of three viking ships that were dug up from burial mounds. Two are very well preserved because of the clay content of the earth they were buried in and there is also a nice collection of very ornate viking carved objects that accompanied the buried ships. It was no Vasa, but it fit our aspirations for the day perfectly. We decided to catch the public ferry back across the bay, making short order of getting back into downtown Oslo. We decided the weather and our middle of the night departure were good excuses to enjoy our room. On the way home we stopped for a few more groceries and repeated our low budget dinner back home in our kitchenette one more time.
