Daily Didactic

We got up a little early, anticipating a visit from someone to do a little cleaning up from last night's storm. Theresa painted in the kitchen and Brian internetted in the bedroom/sitting room where the signal from the hotel across the street works. The owners swear they have an agreement with Hotel Rocco. Soon Tony, Kim's husband showed up. He surveyed the soaked plaster and mopped up the standing water in the second bedroom. After he took off, we got our act together and headed out for some art tourism. We walked across the Charles Bridge and bobbed and weaved the narrow streets of old Prague until the found the House of the Black Madonna, apparently named for the statue of a black Mary in a niche on it's exterior. The building was originally as a department store by famous Czech cubist architect Josef Gocar's, but now houses the Museum of Czech Cubism. It is an example of cubist architecture, of which Brian had no idea there was a such a thing. A cool looking building, some really great cubist sculptures, some cubist furniture we'd love to own, and just the right size. From here we were off to another small museum, this one of work by Alphonse Mucha. When Brian asked what this one was about, Theresa assured him he'd recognize the prints from Antiques Roadshow. He did. They are the iconic art deco prints that were used advertise shows and events in the late 1800s and early 1900s. One floor and fun to look at, a great bite sized museum. We had one more modest tour in mind, but when we got to the architecturally art deco Prague Municipal Building the last tour was over. We'll be back tomorrow. We headed back home to whip up a meal and walk up to Prague Castle after dark. Another (much smaller) thunderstorm dashed the castle walk again, so we hung out and enjoyed our space, sporadically looking out our windows at a couple of slightly obscured but ridiculous views.
