Day Thirtynine - Jun 29, 2012
Lisbon, Portugal
Daily Didactic
We started the day by joining the Oasis Hostel free walking tour that we hadn't made it around to yet. The 10:30 tour started at 11:00, as our really great tour guide had celebrated a birthday the night before. For the next three hours the two of us, one Scott, one Puerto Rican, two British, and two Swedes followed Aaron (an expat Australian) up and down the hills of Lisbon, around a castle, to a few spectacular viewpoints, and down a bunch of great streets we would have never found. We also picked up quite a bit about Portugese Poets, places we should eat, and stuff we should probably do. It was one of the most entertaining things we've done all summer. We probably should have done this day one, but we were exhausted. We also should have brought a camera, not sure what we were thinking. The tour ended around 2:00 and we headed straight for a nearby restaurant that Aaron had identified as having "the best chicken in Lisbon". They may have made it, but they were out of it. We had some seafood kabobs instead and then headed back out with a camera to get a few photos of walking tour highlights. A few hours later we had more or less rewalked the tour route (plus a little) and took a break for a few hours. Around 9:00 we headed back over to the hostel's main building (we are in an annex up the street) for some barbecue. We spent a fun couple of hours getting to know our walking tour cowalkers and signed on to another hostel sponsored event, the Lisbon pub crawl to see a little of Lisbon's storied night life. The crawl started at midnight and was a kick. The hilly rues of Lisbon turn into a street party at night and there were more people out after midnight than we had seen during the day. Guided by our deft Canadian facilitator we hung on for a few hours before leaving our new friends still in high gear and calling it a very late night.
