Day Twentyfive - Jun 15, 2012
Milan, Italy to Ventimiglia, Italy
Daily Didactic
We woke early to take a stab at seeing the Last Supper, still not clear on what the 8:00-10:00 a.m. window of cancellation did for us. Turns out it really just got us a nice early morning walk through downtown Milan. There were no openings for a few weeks and no cancellations. Theresa considered hopping a fence, but Brian talked her down. We wandered back toward our digs and stumbled across the Sforzesco Castle, an absolutely enormous medieval walled city now containing a number of museums and galleries. Normally we would have given some thought to this (and we did wander around inside a bit) but last night we realized Brian had misunderstood the train schedule to Marseille. Turns out there is a difference between a "night train" and trains that travel at night. If we wanted to avoid something like twelve hours of nighttime train travel, with a four hour stop in the middle of the night somewhere, we were going to need to break it into two days. We decided that (as Milan and our lodging were not impressing us very much) we were going to give the next two nights to somewhere else. The obvious place was a little town dead center time wise between us and Marseille, Ventimiglia, the last town on the Italian coast. We checked out of our room and, after a little shopping, hit the rails for what turned out four hours later to be a lovely alternative.
