Daily Didactic

Today was another travel day. We rose early for us, packed, and had a little breakfast before we headed back across the Charles Bridge for the train station. As with a few places now, we've found that we could walk back to the train station almost as fast as dealing with trams and metros. The reality is that folks assume you are coming with luggage, not backpacks. Rollerbagging a mile or so is impossible, backpacking not so much. We caught train 175 to Vienna, found our "airline style" seats, and settled in for the next five hours. We've come to really love train rides. You can walk around, stare out the window at countryside, paint, compute, and get something to eat. So much better than planes. We got to Wein Meidling at 1:22 and, after an S-Bahn ride, found our apartment for rent by 2:15. We got our keys and a quick orientation and by 2:30 we were heading out to find some lunch. We don't know what the name of the place was, but we had some Austrian goulash and espanola pork and were more than full half way through. We took our leftovers "take away", dropped them off, and packed some rain gear for the walk to the grocery store as the skies looked ominous. Half way there we found ourselves hiding in a subway stop with the locals waiting for the deluge to slow. Eventually we charged, Alaskan style, out into the rain and made it to Billa. Shopping here could be a great reality series. Toughened, we headed home for an early evening and enjoyed our Viennese digs for the evening.
