Daily Didactic

Man, we love our digs in Brussels. We rose lateish and looked out the window, not terribly disappointed to see a driving rain. If we had to write off the day and spend it in our rented flat, we'd be golden. Brian spent the morning working on catching up on posting pages and Theresa painted. Around noon the weather was looking acceptable. We were conflicted. Everyone says if you are in Brussels you have to go to Brugge. We have a mild tick when everyone says you have to do something, because it sounds touristy. Don't get us wrong, we're touristy, but that "everyone says" thing is what leads to three hour lines. Tipping the scale today was the added encouragement from our apartment renter Dominique, a local. We had a quick lunch of mussels and then walked the ten minutes to Brussels Central and caught the train an hour away to Brugge. Brugge is a little like Aix En Provence, which we day tripped to from Marseille. A pretty perfectly preserved little (in this case) medieval town. We ended up really liking Brugge, the architecture was beautiful and we followed a non-thematic self guided walking tower through the narrow and winding roads. We climbed the Belfry for a panoramic vista, hit a 150 year old brewery, and found Theresa some Belgian chocolate. We caught the 7:00pm train back to Brussels and (an hour later) grabbed some more mussels for dinner. We love Brussels mussels. A little dinner and another season premiere on iTunes later, we called it a very high return/low impact day in Belgium.
