Daily Didactic

A pretty amazing day in the streets of Pompeii. We rose earlyish and hit the sidewalks for the train station. The day's agenda involved a train ride to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, sadly famous for being all that and then getting covered by the volcano Vesuvius. We intended to find some breakfast on the way to the station, but Naples isn't really about the sidewalk cafes like it's Roman peers. We bought our tickets in the train station and either had a choice to catch a train in five minutes or thirty five minutes. We chose five. The incredibly tagged train to Sorrento was more like a sad public transit bus that really would just like a paint job. We exited with a small throng at Pompeii Scavi (excavation wethinks) and bought our tickets. There was apparently a snack shop somewhere mid ruins, so there was culinary hope on the horizon. We literally roamed the streets of old Pompeii in and out of temples, forums, theaters, and colosseums for hours. It was pretty fascinating to get a feel for the layout of a two thousand year old town. That snack shop? Low on food so we had a tube of Pringles like potato chip like items. We decided that we would check out Sorrento, supposedly cute and quaint and just up the line, for a nice lunch. It was both cute and quaint, but about 30 more minutes up the line. Eventually we found an awesome little patio for some real pasta and all was well with the world again. After looking at the Mediterranean, we backtracked to Naples and (with the exception of some late night desert on the local piazza) called it a day.
