Daily Didactic

We rose and headed out to see how much of the Cinque Terre trail (Via Del'Amour) we could hike. The section from Riomaggiore to Manorola is like a cliffside sidewalk and is only about ten minutes long. The section from Manorola to Corniglia is normally like this, but is washed out from last fall's flooding and has a higher alternate route. From Corgnilia to Vernazza there is no option at the moment but train. So... we walked to Manorloa and then headed nearly straight up trail "6" for a good half hour to forty-five minutes. We were often convinced we were just wandering in vineyards and then would stumble upon trail markers. We eventually came across the hilltop village of Volastra and then walked the ridge for quite a while before dropping down to Corniglia. After a bite to eat, we hopped a train to the village of Vernazza. This village took the brunt of the flooding and is under construction in general. It was picturesque, but packed with tourists and building projects and a little hectic so we caught the next train back to quieter Riomaggiore. We met and chatted with our new neighbors, a great couple of newlyweds from Chicago, before heading out to find a restaurant our host Emiliano had recommended. After one of the best fresh seafood meals we've ever had we wandered back down the lane to home and called it an awfully productive day.
