Marseille, France to Barcelona, Spain
Daily Didactic
Today we headed from Marseille to Barcelona, giving pretty short shrift to France for now. We'll be back in a month. We caught a relatively early 8:18 train, we have two transfers today to get us where we are going. The first two legs were in first class (the manner to which we've become accustomed), the last leg was second class which was also very nice. Second class seems to vary significantly depending on your host country. Not only did our travels involve multiple trains, it involved the local Barcelona Metro subway. We come from a land without metros and have studiously avoided them up to now, but armed with instructions for Kim the apartment owner we took the escalator down from the train station. Turns out to be really easy and fast. We climbed back into daylight on "The Ramblas", one of the primary connector streets of Barcelona. Also apparently where the cruise ships unload for the day. Also the place most likely to have your pocket picked in Europe, according to Rick Steves. We thought it looked like same the tourist street we've seen a lot of places. We eventually found our first zig, Carrer d'En Hostpital, and then zagged into the alley of a street called Carrer d'En Robador. We found our door and then, four flights up, found Kim and her really great little apartment. She gave us keys and a ton of written advice. We got settled and then headed to the nearby La Boqueria market. It was ridiculously full of everything. We ended up with European perch, clams, fresh salad makings, and a bottle of local wine. We headed back to our kitchen and whipped up dinner and Theresa set about planning a little Picasso and a lot Gaudi.
